The Prairie Kitchen Store is an independent, family-owned business, began by longtime Iowa City residents Susan, Kevin and Alex Felker. It is located at 160 N. Linn St., Iowa City, IA 52245, former site of the long-standing community favorite Motley Cow Cafe restaurant, in downtown Iowa City's historic Northside neighborhood.
Kevin is a native Iowan, and has been a lecturer for the Department of Business Analytics in the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa since 2001 (retiring in 2022!). His ancho chili and maple glazed pork chops won the 2009 Tippie faculty grill-off competition. His love of Mexican food started at a small restaurant under the Central Street El train stop in Evanston, Ill., and continued while living in Arizona for nine years. He maintained a Monarch Waystation habitat in the family's backyard for many years.
Susan previously served as an Assistant Dean for the Undergraduate Program in the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa. Cooking, baking, and gathering with family and friends in the kitchen has been a lifetime passion. Much like a well-conditioned cast iron skillet, her experience has been seasoned by decades of hosting dinner parties, baking birthday cakes, and creating memorable family gatherings around the table. Susan is a member of the Iowa City Downtown District Board of Directors.
Alex has enjoyed every step (or almost every step) in the process of helping his parents realize the kitchen store that they have dreamed of. He enjoys using his experience as a newspaper copy editor to carefully craft PKS's organization and displays so that customers feel welcome and excited to visit the store. When he's not taste testing hot sauces, you can find him playing basketball, tirelessy testing Iowa City's pizza joints or enjoying time outside with his wife, Siri.
